MAIRIN HARTT

My work is an attempt to establish a physical representation of the elusive – exploring the uncomfortable space between growth and decay/existence and non-existence. Moments of entropy or deterioration are studied, mimicked, or appropriated. My practice is an extension of the futile desire to capture life – to capture the Sublime. I contrast colors, textures, and methods of representation to parallel this tension. Watercolor and ink are used intuitively, while pen and graphite provide detailed and controlled mark making. Paper adds a sense of stability, whereas mylar and glass enhance the fragile and ephemeral quality of the work. The resulting images become unknown, abstract spaces, alluding to both macroscopic and microscopic entities.
